First Try on Automatic Transmission

Finally, i got the chance to drive with automatic transmission. Had a few chances before, but I never had the guts to try it... up until two days ago that is. You may call me weird: someone that is used to drive in manual transmission should have no problem driving in automatic transmission. Yeah, I know that... It's just that, I always think that even though i can navigate the car with ease, i won't be able to accelerate/decelerate right... Which will affect my "agility" on the road. That is why I always hesitated whenever I am faced with a circumstance that requires me to drive an automatic transmission. And somehow it always end up with someone else driving that car instead of me, hehehe...

But two days ago was different. My colleague asked me to go home  with him and a few friends in his car. On the way to the parking lot, he suddenly gave me his car key, he wanted to take a rest on the way home. Not knowing he brought his automatic transmission car, I accepted the key. When we got to the car and saw his car, I said to myself "Oh what the heck, let's give it a shot right now..."

So, I drove it. Flawlessly. From Jakarta to Bogor.

I'm right though, I accelerated awkwardly. Especially when I have to move from a full stop and when I have to pass someone on the toll road. I found it difficult to measure how much pressure I should give to the gas pedal to gain certain speed. I felt automatic transmission is anything but responsive. I think it's because the car's speed is controlled by a certain algorithm based on the pedal position, so the car needs some time to think (or maybe guess) what I actually want.

Right now, I still prefer driving in manual transmission tough. Perhaps all I need is to do more driving with an automatic transmission. So that I can get used to it and understand better how the algorithm works.

Hehehehe... But nothing beats the thrill of having one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the gear-shift...(especially tackling those winding roads of southern java)... -ala colin mcrae rally- :P

Btw, it's funny how you test this blog in 2005... but started to actually write in it by the end of 2009... :P

I agree with what you said 100%! I'm a manual transmission lover you know. I always have My left hand on the stick when I'm driving one...

Yeah, I made this account back in 2005 just to see the features within and how the dashboard would look like..
